2020’s LEGO Technic 42096 Porsche 911 RSR is 1,500 pieces of lean racing looks [Review]

Just three years after LEGO’s premium-branded 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Billund’s designers are returning to the German marque for another shot at the iconic 911. 42096 Porsche 911 RSR will be available Jan 1, 2020, for $149.99 USD (Dec. 26 in Europe). It includes 1,580 pieces.

Ringing in at 19 inches in length, it’s the largest set of the January Technic wave, and much larger than the tiny Speed Champions 911 RSR we reviewed in February 2018. Let’s see how this newest entrant to the LEGO Technic vehicles squadron stacks up.

The box and contents

Before we delve into what the Technic Porsche 911 RSR is, let’s talk about what it’s not. The 911 RSR is not a luxury experience like 2016’s Porsche 911 GT3 RS or 2018’s Bugatti Chiron. However, Technic’s history with large-scale vehicles modeled after beloved sports and race cars didn’t begin in 2016 with the GT3 RS. An unidentified “supercar” was released in 1994 (8880), and a few more vaguely recognizable but unbranded vehicles (8448 and 8070) have been sprinkled in the intervening years. Starting in 2005, though, LEGO began partnering with real manufacturers to license vehicle designs, resulting in the Enzo Ferrari 1:10, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorino, Williams F1 Racer, Ferrari F1 Racer 1:8, and others. Each of those sets was a standard Technic set, with traditional packaging in line with other Technic sets and the rest of LEGO’s catalog. And this new Porsche 911 RSR is in line with those classic sets, not the two recent ultra-premium outliers of the GT3 RS and the Chiron. You won’t find individual boxes for each car component here, and you won’t find in-depth backgrounds on the model’s history or a podcast to keep you company during the build. Instead, the box and packaging match the rest of the 2020 Technic theme, and while I miss the premium experience of those sets, it’s only the set’s subject matter that makes me even think about it here.

Inside are 13 bags, a sealed bag with the instructions and stickers, and the four rubber tires. You may note a key phrase missing from the previous sentence: “numbered bags.” That’s not a mistake. This 1,580 piece set has no numbered bags. I can’t think of the last time I encountered a newly designed set even close to this large which didn’t have that simple build aid that we now take for granted. (Last month I built the 826-piece Vestas Wind Turbine which lacked bag numbering, but since it is effectively a re-release of a 10-year-old set, I won’t count it.)

There’s plenty of stickers to go around, with two very large sticker sheets. While most of them make sense even if I do prefer printing, some seem unnecessary. In fact, one of the roof stickers is pure white, placed on a white piece. Its only function seems to be to hide a bit of texture on the panel and to make it match the other three roof panels. The instruction manual dives straight into the build with no special features, though there is a spread at the end of the booklet matching the Technic model against the real car (it’s a much closer match than the perspective on the curved page makes it appear).

For parts, there are no entirely new elements, but there are a handful of elements appearing in new colors. One of the more interesting is red towball pins. As that’s only the third color for the towball pins in 24 years and they don’t appear in any visible locations, so it’s a good bet the new color was introduced for another set and just happens to show up here first. The curved gear rack also makes an appearance in black, making this only the second set to feature this element in black, and only the fourth set overall to have the part in any color.

The only printed elements in the set are the curved wheel arch panels first introduced in the orange Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Each of the four white panels is printed uniquely to match the car’s striping.

Time to dive into the build, then. With over 1,500 pieces and no bag numbering, the 503-step manual is beginning to look a bit daunting.

You’ll have to get creative with your mise en place, setting out the bags carefully, so that you don’t spend the majority of your time hunting for elements. For me, that meant dumping each bag into the compartments of three large IKEA sorting trays, with a little bit of extra sorting to filter some parts down to sensible categories.

The actual build begins with the rear differential and double-wishbone suspension. It’s a precursor of things to come: nicely designed, but without much innovation.

The base frame and front suspension (also double wishbone) soon follows.

The engine is a flat six, made in traditional Technic style with moving pistons, a design that hasn’t updated much over the last 30 years.

The entire assembly is then slotted into the frame and mated to the differential with minimal gearing. Unlike every other Porsche 911 ever made, the RSR’s engine is mounted forward of the rear suspension, making the RSR the first ever mid-engined 911.

From there, the frame is extended out the front and back to support both bumpers, and the steering and seat are installed. The steering is a simple rack-and-pinion affair with a considerable amount of slop (about 45° on the steering wheel before the wheels engage the turn).

Even though it doesn’t look very complete, at this point, the remaining build is simply cladding the car in body panels. Most of the larger panels apart from the wheel arches receive stickers.

The completed model

The new-for-2017 Porsche 911 RSR is the heavily modified race version of the already track-focused 911 GT3 RS. As such, it’s a Le Mans racer through and through, and what it lacks in luxury it makes up for in on-track capability.

For the LEGO model, that translates to a sparse interior and a killer paint job, but leaves a bit wanting in the technical category.

The RSR has banks of LED headlights, and although they stick out a bit more in the model than they do in the real car, the finished look works well enough.

The rear diffuser is an elaborate contraption that looks killer in all black, like the tail fins on a spaceship. The top of the splitter is stickered with silver, while the top of the wing gets PORSCHE branding.

The roof of the car has two small antennas, one made with a rapier, which is a good use of that element. Unlike the Chiron and 911 Gt3 RS, the roof is not a structural element of the car, and there’s no way to lift the car by grabbing the roof. The only way to lift the vehicle is by picking it up from underneath, a job that requires two hands.

The interior of the car is sparse as befits a “minimize weight at all costs” racecar. In the real car, even the seat is permanently affixed with no means of adjustment, instead allowing the pedals to move to accommodate different drivers. Likewise, there’s no adjustments here, and the seat is simply a rigid, no-frills approach with studless beams.

Inside the driver’s door is a small map of the Laguna Seca circuit, and the center console is awash in brightly colored buttons. Above that is a small radar screen that will notify the driver of approaching vehicles attempting to overtake from the behind, though the on-screen display in the LEGO model is a bit fanciful. There’s no instrumentation in the usual place behind the steering wheel.Overall, it’s not a bad facsimile of the real deal, though the steering wheel is in need of a better design in addition to being mounted a bit higher.

On the opposite side (we can’t call rightfully call it the passenger side, since there’s only one seat), we can get a good look at the ad-hoc air conditioning vent system that wraps around the center console. The rest of the details are a severe letdown, however. Where the passenger seat would usually be, a variety of wires, fuses, and other gizmos are stickered on haphazardly placed tiles with exposed studs between them, giving it an unfinished look. The long red cylinder is likely meant to be a fire extinguisher, but it bears little resemblance.

The working features on this model are quite limited, boiling down to steering, suspension, moving pistons, and opening engine cover and doors. The front hood does not open. The bar down the center of the windshield is actually the single wiper blade, which rests in the vertical position. Its simple design feels monumentally underwhelming, and it’s hard to tell that’s what it’s meant to be at all.

The engine cover hides the mid-mounted engine with exposed pistons. The rear wheels are geared into the pistons via the differential.

Comparisons to the 911 GT3 RS are inevitable, as my constant references throughout this article have already proven. Let’s take a look at them side by side, then. It’s immediately obvious that the RSR is a smaller scale than the GT3 RS, though both cars are stunning. It’s unfortunate that you won’t be able to display them side by side as equals, since having both the track and race versions of Porsche’s top 911 model would be a great display for any LEGO Porsche enthusiast (which I count myself among, as my long-time username of Porschecm2 evidences).

Looking at them from above, the distinction is even more clear. However, hefting them the difference is absolutely unmistakable, as the lack of a working gearbox and other internals makes the RSR’s weight more than 45 percent less than that of the GT3 RS (2.9lbs versus 5.3lbs, respectively).

Together the with the Chiron, they look terrific even with the scales being a bit mixed.

Conclusion & recommendation

The Porsche 911 RSR’s exterior comes close to being on par with the premium Chiron and 911 GT3 RS. The interior is significantly less complex and lacks many of the features of those sets, but it’s also priced to reflect this difference, coming in at half the price of those models. The working features all function well, and while there’s nothing innovative, there’s also little to complain about in these tried-and-true designs aside from a bit of steering slop. Certain parts of the design, however, fall well below expectations, such as the windshield wiper and driver’s compartment. The passenger compartment is frankly hideous and is a distinct black mark on the design. The lack of numbered bags simply isn’t acceptable in a new set of this size in 2018. And while it’s minor, there’s also a mistake in the instructions which adds to the overall rushed feeling of this set (page 174, for those curious).

Nevertheless, despite a few missteps, if you can be content to spread out your LEGO bricks all over the floor or dining room table and devote a good few hours to searching for pieces and building, you’ll be rewarded with a great looking model of one of Porsche’s most groundbreaking racecars.

LEGO Technic 42096 Porsche 911 RSR will be available on January 1 from the LEGO Shop online in North America ($149.99 in the US, $199.99 in Canada) and December 26 in Europe (£139.99 in the UK). It is also available from third-party sellers on eBay and BrickLink.

Also check out the LEGO Porsche 911 RSR ($29.99 in the US) from the Speed Champions theme for a less pricey RSR experience.

New LEGO Technic Summer 2020 Sets Revealed

Following the reveal of the LEGO City 2020 summer sets at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, German LEGO fan correspondent Zusammengebaut continues his coverage of the events as they unfold at the LEGO showroom at the prestigious European toy fair. We’ve heard the first line-up of summer 2020 LEGO City sets, and this time, we now know that we will be getting four additional LEGO Technic summer 2020 sets slated to be available in August 1.

  • Spider Crane (42097)
  • Car Transporter (42098)
  • Off-Road Vehicle (42099)
  • Liebherr 9800 (42100)

The Car Transporter (42098) is interesting since Zusammengebaut describes it as 2 builds in 1, with one build as the same size as that of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (42093), and another for the Car Transporter itself. This set is second to the largest of the four sets coming in at 2,493 pieces.

The Spider Crane (42097) is another 2-in-1 set that comes in 920 pieces, while the Off-Road Vehicle (42099) comes with the new CONTROL+ system, three Power Functions motors, and independent suspensions.

The last set in the list could be the most complex among the four LEGO Technic Summer 2020 sets. The Liebherr 9800 (42100) comes at 4,108 pieces and includes seven Power Function motors that are individually controllable allowing for a wider range of movement. It also has two smart hubs and features the new digital CONTROL+ system.

It definitely looks like LEGO is levelling up its next generation of Technic sets following these new innovations. I’m not so much into LEGO Technic, but this are surely exciting sets to watch out for in August.

Stay tuned for more updates! Special thanks once again to Zusammengebaut for keeping us in the loop and sharing these images.

21 Best Lego Technic Sets: Your Ultimate List (2020)

  • Updated Feb 12, 2020 at 1:38pm

Looking for the best LEGO Technic sets? We’ve got you covered with the list below. There are various Technic kits available, ranging from cars to helicopters to RC vehicles. That’s right — you can even build your own RC cars thanks to some of the incredible Lego Technic sets available. Here are the 21 best Lego Technic sets for sale in 2020:

You can actually build LEGO cars that you can control with a remote with the LEGO Technic sets. For example, check out the RC Tracked Racer set (#42065). It features an ultra-cool looking vehicle that has large tracks instead of wheels, and it can also be built into an off-road truck. Both vehicles have a green base with white and black pinstripe going down the center. It’s intended for ages 9-16 years.

It has 370 pieces, so it’s one of the more intermediate Technic LEGO sets available.

LEGO has been introducing new power functions into their line of toys since 1977, and now there are more functions than we know what to do with. This set uses some of those functions, and your kids are going to love them!

One of the most popular Technic kits is the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and it’s simply because it looks so cool. Sure, it’s one of the more expensive sets available, but the end result is a quality Porsche replica. It features the car’s signature aerodynamic bodywork and the spoiler is adjustable. It also features a working gearbox and steering wheel. It also comes with authentic stickers.

I should note that this LEGO Technic Porsche was actually designed right alongside Porsche engineering experts to ensure quality and realism.

The LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS comes with 2,704 pieces, and it’s intended for the advanced LEGO builder. Recommended for ages 16+.

If you’re more into Mario Kart than you are Forza, check out the LEGO Technic Race Kart (#42048). No, this LEGO Technics set isn’t actually Mario-themed, but it does let you build an awesome race kart in the same vein. It has a working steering column and gearbox, detailed engine complete with moving piston, a fuel tank, foot pedals, and big exhaust pipes. The end result is an awesome purple and orange race kart that’s impressive to behold.

It’s also a 2-in-1, and it works with the Lego Building Instructions app that’s on Google Play and the Apple App Store. It’s meant for kids between the ages of 9 and 16.

One of the outright coolest-looking LEGO Technic sets is the Drag Racer (#42050), which sports a cool blue and black colorway. It has a huge, detailed V8 engine that has working pistons. You can also pull long wheelies, thanks to a wheelie bar. The back tires are massive in comparison to the front, giving it a drag racing-look we’re used to. What’s more, you can actually upgrade it with a LEGO Power Functions Set so that it has motorized driving.

It’s an intermediate LEGO builder set that comes in at 647 pieces, and it’s recommended for ages 10-16.

Looking to build your own hot rod? The Getaway Racer (#42046) is your best choice. It’s one of the easier Technic builds available, coming in at just 170 pieces. It has a black and dark gray color scheme that’s paired with awesome stickers and wheels that have a gold rim. It also uses kinetic motion with a pull-back motor so that you can pull it back and release it to watch it go. And thanks to its heavy-duty front bumper, you don’t have to worry much about breaking it when releasing.

Recommended for ages 7 to 14.

The brand new LEGO Technic pull-back racers are AWESOME! Our favorite of the new line is the WHACK! #42072 kit which allows you to build a super fast pull-back racer to raise with your friends. It looks like a hyper RC car, but it’s built entirely with LEGOs – making it one of the best Lego Technic Sets available in 2018.

One of the highest-rated Technics kit is the Police Interceptor (#42047). It has an impressive 4.8 out of 5.0 star review rating from over 90 customers on Amazon. With this kit, they’ll be able to build an impressive and cool-looking police vehicle unlike any you’ve ever seen. It has the look of a Jeep, but with a white, lime-green, and black color scheme and police stickers. It is one of the easier Technic sets to put together, and it has just 185 pieces. Intended for ages 7-14.

Another one of the bigger, more advanced Technic kits is this massive Bucket Wheel Excavator (#42055). If your kids love construction toys, they’ll absolutely love the Bucket Wheel Excavator. It’s highly detailed, and it features a slew of Lego power functions, including forward and reverse driving. It also has motorized conveyor belts and bucket wheel.

On top of that, it’s a 2-in-1 kit, so it also turns into a mobile aggregate processing planet. It’s definitely one of the more advanced sets available, and it’s recommended for ages 12-16. It has nearly 4,000 pieces (3,929 to be exact), so don’t expect to have it together in an hour. However, as some who have put this baby together claim, it’s one of their greatest accomplishments once it’s all completed.

Although it’s a bit more expensive than the majority of the other Technic LEGO sets, it’s still one of our favorites.

If you haven’t noticed, the majority of these sets are quite impressive visually, and the Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 isn’t any different. It’s one of the more challenging LEGO kits available, and it has 2,793 total pieces. It features a fully independent suspension, 6-cylinder engine complete with moving pistons, a detailed cab, and it has Lego power functions. Most impressively, of course, is the automated crane arm and grabber. Super cool.

If you used to frequently play Hydro Thunder, check out this Hydroplane Racer (#42045). It will allow you to build a hydroplane boat, and it works with the interactive Lego building app to show you how to do so. The end result is a blue, white, and black racing hydroplane that comes with a large cockpit, a detailed engine, and a spinning propeller. It’s one of the coolest gifts for 8 year old boys and young teens.

One of the cheapest Technic sets is the Display Team Jet (#42044), which comes in at just $8.29. It comes with 113 pieces, and it’s recommended for 7 to 14 year olds. It has a high-tech design, complete with a large cockpit and a retractable undercarriage. It’s a sporty-looking jet that’s going to look great in their collection.

Another great construction vehicle available is the Volvoe EW160E, which also rebuilds into a Volvo l30g. It features a working bucket, and it’s powered by an advanced pneumatic system. There are also some manual functions as well, including a rotating superstructure. it comes with 1,166 pieces and is good for ages 10-16 years.

This highly-rated LEGO Technic kit is of a popular motorcycle, the BMW R 1200 GS. It features black spoke wheels and has all-terrain tires, as well as a cool-looking windshield. It’s highly detailed, complete with dashboard, exhaust, and working steering. It has a 2-cylinder boxer engine that has moving pistons, and it even has a kickstand. The blue and black colorway is topped off by a classic BMW logo. It measures 4″ high, 11″ long and 7″ wide.

Looking to tear it up in the arctic tundra? Check out the Extreme Adventure Building Kit (#42069), which showcases an awesome purple and black tundra jeep-looking thing that you’ll absolutely love. The wheels are tracks, similar to what you’d find on a snowmobile. It’s also a 2-in-1 model that rebuilds into a mobile base vehicle, complete with a usable crane.

Of all of the LEGO Technic sets available, this one is one of the coolest and most unique-looking, in my opinion.

If they’re more into big trucks than motorcycles and hydroplanes, you might want to consider the 6×6 All Terrain Tow Truck (#42070). This hefty tow truck is a remote-controlled six-wheeled monster with mega tires, extendable outriggers, and a working crane and winch. It’s massive, coming in at 20 inches high, 24 inches long, and 14 inches wide.

This 2-in-1 model can also be built as a research explorer vehicle, a 4-wheeled monster that’s ready for adventure.

It comes with 1,862 pieces, and it’s recommended for 11-16 year olds.

Jets have a never-ending appeal to kids especially, thanks to their speed. The Air Race Jet (#42066) is an intermediate LEGO Technic set that comes with 1,151 pieces. When fully assembled, it measures 9 inches tall, 22 inches long, and 14 inches wide.

It has an adjustable jet nozzle, a fuselage that opens and closes, a retractable undercarriage, and it has working front steering. It can also be build into a private jet.

Fight fires and land on the ocean with this Technic Fire Plane Building Kit (#42040). It has an awesome red and white color scheme, and it comes complete with an actual spinning propeller. It comes with 8 water Legos that can be dumped out of its rear, dousing the fires below.

It can also be built into a jet plane.

Quite possibly the best-looking LEGO motorcycle we’ve ever seen is the Technic Street Motorcycle (#42036). This sleek and sporty ride has full fairing, chain drive, working steering, and a detailed engine. It comes with slimline sporty wheels and a cool blue and red color scheme. It can also be built into a retro bike with an elongated body and lower handlebars. It’s recommended for ages 9 to 16, and it comes with 375 pieces.

Four wheeling more your style? Check out the Quad Bike kit (#42034) that allows you to build a great-looking yellow, black, blue, and gray quad racer. It has deep tread tires and a heavy duty bull bar, so you know it’s ready for some off-roading. It also has a pull-back motor, so you’re able to pull it back and let it go on its own. It’s one of the easier Technic Sets to put together, coming with only 148 pieces. Recommended for ages 7-14.

More construction vehicles? Yes, please. The RC Volvo L350F Wheel Load is an RC tractor that allows for simultaneous driving and digging. It sports the typical yellow and black colorway we typically see with Volvo’s construction vehicles, too, making it the ultimate replica. It can also be built into a Volvo A25F.

Drive, dig, and scoop at your leisure. It comes with 1,636 pieces and is recommended for ages 11-16.

Sea adventure is calling, and the LEGO Technic Ocean Explorer (#42064) is ready to answer. It’s a mega-sized ship that has a bulbous bow, large captain’s bridge complete with radar detailing, and a landing pad for your air vehicles. It also has a working crane. On top of that, it also comes with a buildable submarine and helicopter.

It comes with 1,327 pieces and is recommended for ages 10-16.

Lego is one of the most popular toy brands in America, and it’s because, year after year, the company continues to create cool building kits of all different varieties. Whether you’re a fan of the classic Legos, their line of architecture-inspired kits, or you’ve got a few Lego Star Wars sets in your bedroom, chances are that you’ve played with Legos at some point in your life.

One of their most popular toy lines is called Lego Technic, and instead of just using building bricks and other snap-together pieces in typical Lego fashion, these sets include interconnecting plastic rods, gears, and other unique parts that allow kids (okay, and adults) to make builds with complex moving parts.

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

Stunt racer

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

GloW PoWer

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations

this is awful..they seem to be the uglier copy of the past year sets!

+Desert Eagle LEGO® Technic Creations the tracked loader is the saving grace of this first half, also the boat is nice..but cars..😑
